MIddle School water polo is mainly handled through the Va Beach recreation centers and the Kraken Travel team. The VA Beach recreation centers offer waterpolo clinics throughout the year and novice water polo during the spring.
High School waterpolo is available through several resources in the Coastal Virginia Area. Virginia Beach High School offers a formal club associated with their school during the fall season. The Masters league is for post high school players from the ages of 18 to 80. U16 members with at least 2 years of experience are encouraged to participate. The program practices weekly and has games whenever there are enough players to compete. Practices are typically held on sunday at the VA Beach recreation centers and/or the Hampton Aquaplex.
Kraken is the U18 Travel Team for CoVA. Members are under the age of 18 and/or before matriculation to College. This team competes against other travel programs in the mid-Atlantic region from NC to PA, and competes frequently in Richmond and the greater DC area year round.

We need volunteers! We need Team Parents, Equipment setup/breakdown, coaches, timers, scorekeepers and referees. Volunteering helps keep costs reasonable and maximizes your kids pool time! Coaching and Refeering training is free through many online waterpolo organizations.

The travel program offers two free practices for anybody new to waterpolo or the coastal Virginia area. The VA Beach Recreation system does not. You will be required to pay prior to any class or team season.
The travel program offers the highest level of competition. If your child is truly exceptional, many of the teams we play against will invite them to guest play in their tournaments. We have provided visiting players for teams in FL, DC, TX and CA.
Yes, the VA Beach Recreation Center allows non-VA Beach residents to pay a monthly fee (approx $47/month) to use the facility. This fee is not included in the cost of the team sport or training session.
Only VA Beach students enrolled in the public school system can participate in the VA Beach High School Club League. All other students (homeschooled within VA Beach, private schools in VA Beach, and all other areas) must sign up for the Kraken Travel team.
This past fall the travel team played against other programs from the triangle NC area, Richmond VA, Washington DC, and Annapolis. The boy's team played in the boy's national tournament in Dallas, TX. Some of our ladies played with other teams from FL and DC in tournaments in FL, TX, and CA.
Yes, although water polo has been played in the area for over a decade, we typically have to combine boys and girls to field a team. However, some tournaments strictly require boys and girls teams. Most of our games in the midatlantic region are coed.
Players must wear appropriate swimwear. Speedos and one-piece bathing suits are the approved uniforms for travel water polo teams. However, the recreation center allows any swim attire including swim trunks, jammers, and one piece bathing suits. Bikinis and goggles are not allowed; swimcaps are optional (most people don't wear it). Protective Headgear is provided for practice and games. Fingernails and toenails must be trimmed before each practice and each game. Referees inspect nails before each game.
